  1. Since we are using a folder for the Blog do you think this has a strong influence on our Google position? Would it be better to use a domain?

  2. The best solution is always to use a clean top level domain (TLD) with, if possible a contextually well chosen name.

Sub-domains can do the trick to a certain extent, remain however ‘linked’ to the domain and as far as I understand, Google may, even if you use no follow tags on links, give the global situation some consideration.

Folders are clearly part of the selected Domain or Sub-domain and therefore it is recommended to observe contextual integration, namely in the headers and in the navigation or menus.

If your Domain, say, nerigobiz.com was tagged for FREE TRAFFIC, and then you create a folder called AUCTIONS where you load your YORGOO Blaster to promote auction items, then there could be a contradiction between the key-words and other meta tags of the main site and the blog in the sub-folder.

Personally I prefer to set up my blogs on their own contextual TLDs. In this case the folder may have a legal function: many trademarks protect their names till the second ‘/’ in a URI. If you set up your blog in the root of the domain, you will not be able to use the Trademarks as Category slug. You would have to create a sub-category to enter the name of the Brand.

A domain name can be the cheapest way to help your blog to succeed quickly on Google; however, you can also get there with words which don’t have any meaning, http://www.YORGOOpublishing.com, for example :-).

The relation between categories and key-words is defined by your permalinks. As we use the category name in the Post URI, and say if your Category was eBay, then you would end up with either of 3 possibility:

http://nerigobiz.com/category_eBay/post_slug – (This solution is not allowed)

    or

http://nerigobiz.com/blogfolder/ebay/post-slug – (Suppose the blog is loaded into the ‘blogfolder, then eBay can be a category, this solution is allowed)

    or

http://nerigobiz.com/category_xy/sub-category_ebay – (Suppose the blog is loaded in the root of the domain, you then create a category, such as ‘best buy’ and then a sub-category containing the brand name, this solution is allowed)

Now the question is, what is better: load the blog into a sub-folder and create brand categories or load the blog into the root and create a ‘bumper category’ and then sub-categories for the brand labels?

For the purpose of YORGOO Blaster, I prefer to load the blog into a folder and deal straight with the simpler structure within the blog, i.e. without bumper-category.

If you are running a Semiomantics XO, I would run a bumper.

In as much as Google is concerned: we have an advantage to be as contextual as possible in our links, meta tags and content. And we have to make it easy for the robots to read us. A simple script such as YORGOO Blaster is designed for straight forward and clearly focused blogging.

You may ask: what should then be in the root folder of the domain?

It could be a simple redirect to the blog, it could be a normal HTML page with a link to the blog and a ‘follow_link’ tag, whereas you would describe on the main page the blog which is located in the sub-folder as well as other contents of your site. It could just be a personal home page with a few navigation links whereas every link is described in the content of that home page.

You could also load another blog into the root, which could then concern a superior category compared to the blog in the sub-folder.

    Example:
Root: MyDomain.com with a blog about say Online Product Marketing
Sub-folders: blogs targeting different products or brands.

  3. Hi Yorgo

thank you for these tips. Too often we don’t think of these little ‘contextual’ nuances which make all the difference when being indexed by Google.
Will be looking out for more tips! :))

  5. Your Site has a great topic and I am sure it will do great as your other sites do! Let’s just continue adding content to I love Toys as I called it on this site. How about linking it to http://alejandraneri.com and to feed it into an invisible category? Semiomantics pure…:-)
